The country’s longest transportation tunnel ‘T-50’ on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), in a red-letter day in the history of Indian Railways, was dedicated to the nation and the first electrified trains of Kashmir valley were simultaneously flagged off - one from Srinagar to Sangaldan and another from Sangaldan to Srinagar. The tunnel, which is 12.77 km long, lies between the Khari-Sumber section of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL). Prime Minister Narendra Modi commenting on expansion work to connect Kashmir to Kanyakumari by rail said that the day is not far away when people will be able to travel across the country by taking a train from Kashmir. The tunnel, which is 12.77 km long and known as T-50, falls between the Khari-Sumber section. TPM also inaugurated the 48.1-km-long Banihal-Khari-Sumber-Sangaldan section of the USBRL. T-50 is one of the most challenging tunnels on the Banihal-Khari-Sumber-Sangadal section of USBRL. Survey work of the tunnel commenced around 1996 but the tender was awarded in December 2013 so it took around 10 years to operationalise it.
