Railway Completes 70 Per Cent Fabrication For Tiruchy RoB

The construction of a road overbridge (RoB) Phase II across the railway tracks near Tiruchy Junction has gained pace, as railway authorities have completed 70 per cent of the fabrication work of bowstring girders that will be installed above the tracks linking the Aristo roundabout with the Mannarpuram approach roads. The State Highways Department and the railways began the jointly funded scheme in 2024 to ease traffic congestion after the old narrow RoB on the Tiruchy–Madurai section was dismantled.

The railways opted for a bowstring girder for Phase II because it can be largely preassembled on the ground close to the site and launched above the tracks in a single operation, thereby reducing on-track work and disruption. The design spreads heavy loads across the structure to improve durability, and the girders are being fabricated with a length of 58 metres and a width of 15.3 metres, including a 10.5 metre road portion and a 1.5 metre pedestrian pathway.

Tiruchy Railway Division officials reported that 70 per cent of the bowstring girder fabrication is complete while the approach road on the Mannarpuram side is yet to begin. The railway portion of the scheme, covering the construction of two pillars on either side of the tracks and fabricating the girders, has been executed at Rs 50 million (mn). Based on consent from the State Highways Department, the girders will be positioned above the tracks when ready.

The State Highways Department is executing the approach works at an estimated cost of Rs 160 mn, and officials said that work on the Mannarpuram side will commence after completion of the Aristo-side approach road. The coordinated approach is intended to reduce traffic congestion and expedite the safe launch of the girders while minimising disruption to rail and road users.
