RVNL Invites Rs. 2.97 bn Bid for Kolkata Metro Purple Line

Rail Vikas Nigam has invited bids for a Rs. 2.97 bn contract to develop power distribution and traction infrastructure for sections of Kolkata Metro’s Purple Line. The tender, issued on October 22, 2026, covers electrical systems required to support metro train operations across underground and elevated stretches of the corridor.

The scope includes power distribution arrangements, traction substations and a 750 V direct current (DC) third-rail traction system. Traction substations will supply the electricity needed to operate trains, while the third-rail system will transfer power to compatible train equipment. These installations are essential components of the operating infrastructure for the metro network.

The contract covers four underground stations between Mominpur and Esplanade, together with their associated tunnels. It also includes electrical and traction-related works for the elevated section between Joka and the Indian Institute of Management Kolkata, commonly known as IIM Kolkata.

The works form part of the Diamond Park–Joka–Esplanade corridor, which is being developed to extend metro connectivity across southern and central Kolkata. The tendered systems will support train operations on the designated underground and elevated sections once the relevant infrastructure is completed.

Rail Vikas Nigam is a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Railways. It undertakes project development and execution for railway infrastructure, including new lines, line doubling, electrification, bridges, workshops and other transport-related assets. The Purple Line tender adds to the infrastructure work being undertaken to expand Kolkata’s public transport network and improve connectivity across the city.
