UAIL to commission Rs 7,000 cr refinery project by July 2011

Utkal Alumina International Ltd (UAIL), an Aditya Birla group company, will commission its 1.5 mn tonne alumina refinery project located in Rayagada district by July 2011. About 40 per cent of the work is complete and the equipment ordered for the plant has reached the Visakhapatnam port. The implementation of the alumina refinery project of UAIL had suffered a delay of 18 years due to the protests by the project affected people (PAP) and the environmentalists. The disbursement of additional compensation to the PAP is going on and around 50 per cent of them have accepted the ex-gratia compensation. The Rs 7,000 crore plant will feed the smelter plants being set up by the Hindalco Industries at Rengali in Orissa and Mahana in Madhya Pradesh. Both the aluminium smelter projects are under way.
