Adani Ports Builds World’s First Steel Slag Road at Private Port in Hazira

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) has inaugurated what is reported to be the world’s first steel slag road within a private port, marking a global first in sustainable port infrastructure. 

The 1.1-km stretch, located at Hazira Port in Surat, connects the Multi-Purpose Berth (MPB-1) to the coal yard and has been constructed using processed steel slag aggregates—an industrial by-product from steel manufacturing. The initiative reflects a circular economy approach, transforming industrial waste into high-performance road infrastructure. 

This is India’s third steel slag road, but the first implemented at a private port anywhere in the world. Designed for enhanced durability and load-bearing capacity, the project is expected to offer reduced construction costs and a lower carbon footprint, according to officials. 

Developed under Phase II of the Bulk and General Cargo Terminal (BGCT) expansion, the project was a collaborative effort involving APSEZ, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research–Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI), and the Union Ministry of Science and Technology. 

The engineering design was led by CSIR-CRRI, which tailored the flexible pavement structure specifically for port operations. The road was inaugurated by NITI Aayog’s Vijay Kumar Saraswat, CSIR Director-General N. Kalaiselvi, and CSIR-CRRI Director Manoranjan Parida, among others. 

The project is aligned with the Government of India’s Waste to Wealth mission and is seen as a model for eco-conscious infrastructure in the logistics sector.
