APSEZ Unveils World’s First Steel Slag Road Inside Hazira Port

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) has inaugurated the world’s first steel slag road constructed within a port facility at Hazira Port, Gujarat. This innovative 1.1-kilometre stretch connects the multi-purpose berth (MPB-1) to the coal yard and sets a new global standard for the sustainable utilisation of industrial waste.

The project is part of Phase II expansion of the Bulk & General Cargo Terminal (BGCT) and utilises processed steel slag aggregates, a byproduct of steel manufacturing. This demonstrates a forward-thinking, eco-conscious approach to infrastructure development. The initiative is a collaborative effort involving APSEZ, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI), and the Union Ministry of Science & Technology.

The road incorporates a specially designed flexible pavement developed by CSIR-CRRI, which offers enhanced load-bearing capacity and durability. This design also contributes to reduced construction costs and lowers environmental impact. The project supports India’s "Waste to Wealth" mission and highlights APSEZ’s dedication to sustainable port development.

While this marks India’s third steel slag road overall, its distinction as the first within a port facility places the country at the forefront of sustainable infrastructure innovation.
