Ayyankulam, Thanjavur: Smart City Award for Heritage

Ayyankulam, nestled in Thanjavur district, emerged triumphant in the Smart City awards by securing recognition in the cultural and heritage category. The accolade celebrates the commendable efforts undertaken to restore and preserve the historical essence of Ayyankulam.

Established during the Nayakar era at Mela Veedhi in Thanjavur, Ayyankulam encompasses an area of 7,630 square metres. Historically supplied water from the Sivagangai tank near the Big Temple, the water body had fallen into disrepair due to inadequate upkeep.

Against this backdrop, a substantial fund of Rs 51.2 million was allocated under the Smart City program to rejuvenate Ayyankulam. The restoration initiative involved fortifying retaining walls, constructing pathways for pedestrians, installing proper illumination, showcasing various art forms, and incorporating five landscape modules to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the water body. Additionally, the vicinity of Ayyankulam was adorned with Navarathinam and paintings.

Moreover, the renovation process unveiled the ancient underwater pathway that was employed during the rule of ancient rulers. The distribution of water to the tank was subsequently reinstated, revitalising the historical significance of the site.

The award ceremony is scheduled for September 27, where the President of India will present the accolades in Indore. Ayyankulam's recognition underscores the significance of preserving cultural heritage through strategic restoration efforts in alignment with contemporary urban development initiatives.
