CAQM Flags Waste Burning in North Delhi Night Drive

The Commission for Air Quality Management has recently conducted a night-time inspection drive in North Delhi under ‘Operation Clean Air’, identifying multiple instances of municipal solid waste (MSW) and biomass burning, along with illegal waste dumping.

CAQM flying squads inspected Jahangir Puri, Shalimar Bagh and Wazirpur, recording 65 incidents across the three areas. These included 47 cases of biomass or MSW burning and 18 instances of waste dumping, supported by geo-tagged and time-stamped photographic evidence submitted to the Commission.

Biomass burning was largely observed along roadsides, near shops and open spaces, mainly for heating during night hours, while waste dumping was found near markets, industrial pockets and garbage-vulnerable locations. The findings underline the need for enhanced night-time vigilance, particularly in densely populated and industrial areas.

CAQM has directed concerned agencies, including the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, to strengthen waste collection, ensure timely clearance and strictly enforce Solid Waste Management Rules. The Commission stated that enforcement drives under ‘Operation Clean Air’ will continue across Delhi-NCR to curb localised pollution sources and ensure compliance with GRAP measures.
