GPS-Enabled Vehicles to Modernise Bengaluru Waste Collection

Bengaluru’s waste collection system is set for an overhaul with the introduction of new GPS-enabled vehicles, Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said. Many vehicles currently used for garbage collection are more than 15 years old and frequently require repairs, affecting operational efficiency.

The government will introduce a new fleet equipped with GPS systems to track vehicle movement along designated routes and monitor compliance with collection schedules. A GPS-based face-recognition attendance system will also be made mandatory to improve oversight of sanitation personnel and vehicles and provide greater transparency in daily operations.

The revised system will continue to support regular door-to-door collection to discourage residents from dumping waste on roadsides and in public spaces. The number of small 500 kg auto-tippers will be gradually reduced, while four-wheeled vehicles capable of carrying 3 to 5 t of waste will be used more extensively.

Three-wheeled vehicles will remain in service on narrow roads and lanes where larger vehicles cannot operate. The changes are expected to raise Bengaluru’s daily waste collection capacity from 5,200 t to 9,000 t, according to the minister.

At a press conference at the Greater Bengaluru Authority headquarters, Byre Gowda said work orders had been issued for five packages covering five Assembly constituencies. Operations are expected to begin in November, after contractors complete resource mobilisation and establish the required systems.

Under revised tender conditions, contractors must invest approximately Rs. 100 mn in setting up and operating each package. Contractors had sought two months to mobilise resources, and the request was accepted. The authority has divided Bengaluru’s 27 Assembly constituencies into 33 tender packages, of which five have been approved.
