India launches Jal Jeevan Mission Urban for water security

In a significant stride towards ensuring water security in urban areas, the Government of India has launched the 'Jal Jeevan Mission Urban.' This mission, an extension of the successful rural water scheme, aims to provide a reliable and sustainable water supply to all households in urban regions, fostering the vision of 'Har Ghar Jal' (water in every home).

The 'Jal Jeevan Mission Urban' is designed to address the diverse water-related challenges faced by urban areas, including inadequate water supply, uneven distribution, and water quality issues. The mission prioritises the implementation of water supply projects, emphasizing the use of technology and innovation to optimize water management in urban settings.

The initiative aligns with the government's commitment to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6, which focuses on ensuring access to clean water and sanitation for all. By extending the success of the Jal Jeevan Mission to urban areas, the government aims to transform the water landscape of cities and towns, promoting equity and sustainability.

Key components of the mission include the creation of water supply infrastructure, demand-side management, and the implementation of water conservation practices. The 'Jal Jeevan Mission Urban' emphasises community participation, encouraging citizens to actively contribute to the conservation and responsible use of water resources.

As urbanisation continues to expand, ensuring a sustainable and equitable water supply becomes paramount. The 'Jal Jeevan Mission Urban' stands as a comprehensive initiative to address these challenges, laying the foundation for water resilience and security in India's urban landscape.
