MHI-AP wins boiler retrofit contract for Tuas South incineration plant

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. (MHI-AP) has secured a contract from Singapore’s National Environment Agency (NEA) to carry out boiler retrofit work at the Tuas South Incineration Plant (TSIP) in western Singapore.

The retrofit project is aimed at stabilising the waste handling capacity of the stoker-type incinerator and extending the operational life of the waste-to-energy facility. The work is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2027. The project will be executed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Environmental & Chemical Engineering Co., Ltd. (MHIEC), part of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group.

TSIP was originally designed and built by MHI and was completed in 2000. The facility has a waste processing capacity of 3,000 tonnes per day and is currently operated and maintained by NEA.

Under the contract, MHIEC will be responsible for the design, construction and operational support for the retrofit. The company said maintaining stable operations while sustaining plant throughput has become a key challenge in Singapore. MHIEC will leverage its experience as the original designer and constructor of the facility to propose an optimal refurbishment scope that will support long-term plant performance.

The retrofit will include design modifications in specific boiler tube sections that are being replaced. Following completion, MHIEC will also provide ongoing support to ensure reliable operations.

MHIEC has delivered four waste-to-energy incineration facilities in Singapore since beginning operations at the Tuas Incineration Plant in 1986. The company said it is strengthening its focus in Singapore not only on equipment supply, facility design and construction, but also on operations and maintenance services through concession business models and after-sales support.

MHI Group said it will continue supporting Singapore’s sustainable waste management and decarbonisation goals through energy recovery initiatives.
