Maharashtra govt wants centre to clear housing bill

Maharashtra government would request the central government to clear the Maharashtra Housing (Regulation & Development) Bill 2012, which is pending for Presidential assent since last year.

The bill, which was cleared by the state legislature, is awaiting the approval of the central government and the nod of the President.

Through this bill, the state government wants to repeal the Maharashtra Ownership Flats Act, 1963, in a bid to provide relief to flat purchasers against malpractices and difficulties.

The bill has a provision to set up a Housing Regulatory Authority and Housing Appellate Tribunal and the bill aims at removing information asymmetry by ensuring full disclosure and compliance.

Further, the government official said it would be mandatory for the promoter to register the agreement for sale.

The state government apprehends that the Bill should not get scrapped in the wake of the central Act. It may be recalled that the Union Cabinet recently approved the Real Estate (Regulation & Development) Bill.
