Sonepur Station Revamp Under Rs 240m Rail Plan

Sonepur railway station in Bihar, famous worldwide for hosting Asia’s iconic cattle fair, is undergoing major redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) at a cost exceeding Rs 240 million, aimed at transforming it into a modern passenger hub.

Divisional Railway Manager Amit Saran said more than 50 per cent of the core station upgrade has already been completed. The works include Rs 77.3 million for façade redevelopment, Rs 140 million for construction of a new foot over bridge (FOB) and Rs 26.8 million for enhanced passenger amenities.

In the next phase, Railways has approved development of a second station exit costing over Rs 190 million and refurbishment of platforms 3, 4 and 5 at Rs 14.5 million. These projects, totalling Rs 214.3 million, are included in the upcoming ABSS work plan.

Landscaping, painting and finishing works are currently in progress, while platform upgrades focus on safety and accessibility. Passenger facilities being added include upgraded waiting areas, modern toilets, improved lighting, digital display systems, enhanced seating and redesigned circulating spaces.

A key highlight is the newly completed 12-metre-wide FOB, expected to significantly ease crowd movement and reduce congestion during peak travel and festive periods.

As Sonepur serves as the divisional headquarters of East Central Railway, officials said the station is being developed as the most advanced in the division and will emerge as a model facility under ABSS once completed.
