Coal India Wins GRIDCO Order For 320 MWh BESS In Odisha

Coal India Limited has received an order from GRIDCO Limited to establish a battery energy storage system (BESS) of 320 MWh in Odisha, the company disclosed in a regulatory filing to stock exchanges. The project will be developed across two clusters and will feature an 80 MW capacity discharged over four hours. The award follows a Letter of Award issued by GRIDCO and the firm has been required to comply with the terms set out under the SEBI listing rules.

Cluster one will be located at Padampur and Bolangir, with a tariff of Rs 0.304 million (mn) per MW per month. Cluster two will cover Bhatli and Basta and carries a tariff of Rs 0.305 million (mn) per MW per month. The conversion of the original tariff quoted in lakh was applied to present the monthly rates in millions.

The company is required to submit prescribed documents within 20 days following the Letter of Award, after which the Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement will be signed and the performance bank guarantee will be furnished. Execution of the works is scheduled to be completed within 18 months from the signing of the agreement. GRIDCO has awarded the contract as a domestic procurement and the firm disclosed the development under Regulation 30 of the SEBI Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements Regulations, 2015.

The BESS is expected to support grid management by storing surplus generation and supplying power during peak demand, improving system flexibility and aiding integration of variable renewable generation. Coal India will proceed with internal approvals and mobilisation following signature of contractual documents and fulfilment of bank guarantee obligations. The project expands the firm's activities in energy storage and signals a move to diversify beyond its core mining operations. The contract includes performance milestones and routine compliance reporting requirements periodically monitored.
