The Ministry of Coal has launched the 16th round of commercial coal mine auctions, offering 25 blocks across nine coal-bearing states. The latest tranche comprises 21 fully explored and four partially explored mines located in Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana and West Bengal. The auction is aimed at attracting private investment and expanding domestic coal production. The framework permits experienced mining companies, new entrants and technology-driven enterprises to participate, with no end-use restrictions and 100 per cent foreign direct investment through the automatic route.Alongside the new auction round, the ministry executed Coal Mine Development and Production Agreements for six mines auctioned earlier. These mines have combined geological reserves of around 1,504 million tonnes and a peak rated capacity of 11.62 million tonnes per annum. They are expected to attract Rs 1,743 crore in capital investment, generate about Rs 1,984 crore in annual revenue and create around 15,700 jobs.Since commercial coal mining began in 2020, 147 mines have been auctioned, with projected annual revenue exceeding Rs 47,500 crore.
