Tangedco received 192.67 lakh tonnes of domestic coal

According to the policy note for 2023–24 from the Tamil Nadu Energy Department, Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Ltd. (Tangedco) received 192.67 lakh tonnes of domestic coal during 2022–23, the greatest quantity in the previous ten years. V. Senthilbalaji, the minister of electricity, recently presented the paper to the Legislature.

It states that 223.4 lakh tonnes of coal are needed annually to power Tangedco's 4,320-Megawatt thermal power plants at 85% plant load factor. A fuel supply agreement (FSA) with a linkage of 195.63 lakh tonnes per year and a memorandum of understanding with the Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) for 40 lakh tonnes per year are used to purchase Indian coal from Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd. (MCL).

According to Mr. Senthilbalaji, steps have been taken to guarantee a constant supply of power. According to the Central Electricity Authority's (CEA) daily stock report, as of April 12, Tangedco's thermal power facilities had 33% less coal on hand than was considered normal. If a plant's coal stock is less than 25% of the normative need, it is indicated as critical by the CEA. The North Chennai Thermal Power Plant, which has an 1,830 Megawatt capacity, had 14% of its normal coal storage as of April 12.

Less supply from MCL was mentioned in the CEA's coal report, and it was underlined that the Railways had to furnish extra rakes.
