The Union Government proposes to promote renovation and modernisation (R&M) of coal-based power plants of Central and state power utilities with an annual generation capacity of 30,000 MW. The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has invited expressions of interest from consultancy firms and institutions to provide consultancy. India is in additional need of 30,000 MW of the R&M capacity for improvement in the plant load factor.
