GMR subsidiary wins Rs 51.23 bn smart meter project in Uttar Pradesh

GMR Smart Electricity Distribution (GSEDPL), a subsidiary of GMR Power and Urban Infra, has secured a significant contract worth Rs 51.2337 billion for a smart meter project in Uttar Pradesh. The award, presented by Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam, pertains to the deployment of smart meters in various regions of Uttar Pradesh, including Varanasi, Azamgarh, Prayagraj, and Mirzapur, as announced by the company on September 3.

Under this agreement, GSEDPL will assume responsibility for the installation, integration, and ongoing maintenance of 50.17 lakh smart meters within these specified areas.

The project is structured with a 27-month implementation phase commencing upon contract execution, followed by an operational phase lasting 93 months.

The total contract value is divided into approximately Rs 23.8672 billion for the Prayagraj and Mirzapur Zone and roughly Rs 27.3665 billion for the Varanasi and Azamgarh Zone, as disclosed by the company.

This Letter of Award (LoA) was granted following a rigorous e-tender process administered by Uttar Pradesh's distribution companies (DISCOMS). The project is anticipated to unfold over a span of 10 years.

The Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Project encompasses the provisioning, installation, integration, commissioning, and operation and maintenance of smart meters, employing a DBFOOT (Design, Build, Finance, Own, Operate, Transfer) approach. The company emphasises the utilisation of cutting-edge technology and software solutions to achieve fully automated end-to-end functionality.

Land conflicts, population density hinder India's renewable energy goals

A recent report by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) suggests that India’s renewable energy (RE) capacity could theoretically surpass 24,000 gigawatts (GW), though achieving just a portion of this—approximately 7,000 GW needed for net-zero emissions by 2070—will be challenging. The obstacles stem from issues related to land and water availability, as well as population density. The report, titled "Unlocking India’s Renewable Energy and Green Hydrogen Potential: An Assessment of Land, Water, and Climate Nexus," highlights major challenges as India aims to grow from it..
