India Installs 47.6 Million Smart Meters to Modernise Power Sector

The Government has reported that 47.6 million smart electricity meters have been installed across the country under multiple schemes. Under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), proposals submitted by states include the installation of up to 203.3 million smart meters in total.

Smart meters allow consumers to monitor their electricity usage in real time, while enabling distribution utilities to access granular feeder-, transformer- and consumer-level data. This supports accurate billing, timely energy audits and improved loss management. The RDSS rollout is being executed through a public–private partnership model in which private entities are responsible for supplying, installing, maintaining and operating the metering infrastructure.

Beyond metering, the scheme also funds distribution-system modernisation, including substation upgrades, installation of SCADA/DMS systems, underground cabling and other reliability-focused enhancements to strengthen the grid and support renewable-energy integration.

The Government further noted that Aggregate Technical and Commercial losses of distribution companies have declined from 21.91 per cent in FY21 to 16.16 per cent in FY25, with targets to reduce losses to 12–15 per cent in the coming years.
