India’s Energy Resilience Shielded Consumers from Global Supply Shocks

India’s diversification of energy supplies, expansion of refining capacity and strengthening of infrastructure and storage helped protect domestic consumers from shortages during major disruptions to global energy flows, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said.

Speaking at the curtain-raiser for India Energy Week (IEW) 2027 in Kolkata, Puri said the disruptions had reinforced the need to build resilience into the energy system before a crisis. He said pressure on international supplies had not translated into shortages for Indian households, citing diversified sourcing, stronger infrastructure and the expansion of piped natural gas.

Puri said India was moving beyond its position as a large energy consumer and taking a greater role in shaping the global energy conversation. He added that growth, energy security and decarbonisation could progress together, while noting that energy security now also involved reliability, affordability, domestic production and resilience across the wider system.

IEW 2027 will focus on practical solutions linking energy security, affordability, technology, investment and sustainability. Its exhibition and conference programmes will cover oil and gas, liquefied natural gas, refining and petrochemicals, hydrogen, biofuels, digitalisation and artificial intelligence. The petroleum ministry said the event would highlight technologies, innovations and partnerships relevant to countries, particularly those in the global South.

The event will be held at the New Town Convention Centre in Kolkata from January 28 to 31, marking its first edition in eastern India. The fifth edition is expected to attract more than 75,000 energy professionals and 700 international exhibitors, with 17,000 sq m of exhibition space already booked. The 2026 edition in Goa drew more than 75,000 professionals, over 700 exhibiting companies, participants from more than 120 countries and 6,500 conference delegates. Puri said decisions on investment, partnerships, technology, talent and policy would shape energy systems over the next 10 to 15 years.
