Kerala to Deploy 1,000 MWh Battery Storage System

Kerala is set to witness a major boost in renewable energy integration as NTPC Green Energy Limited has issued a tender for a 250 MW/1,000 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at its Kayamkulam site. This project, aimed at improving grid stability, will be executed through an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract.

The battery storage is divided into two 125 MW/500 MWh blocks. Block-one will link with a 33 kV solar pooling switchgear, while block-two will connect to a 220 kV switchyard, helping balance both local and grid-level power supply. The system will store excess solar and wind energy, ensuring round-the-clock green electricity and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

The tender covers design, transport, installation, and integration of the battery units. The selected bidder will deliver the complete project on a turnkey basis, ensuring full system functionality. This move reinforces Kerala’s clean energy ambitions and sets a model for large-scale battery storage across India.

By addressing renewable intermittency, the Kayamkulam BESS will support peak load management, improve energy reliability, and further India’s net-zero goals.
