Keralam to Get Up to 300 MW from NTPC’s Sinnar Project

Keralam will receive up to 300 MW of electricity from the Sinnar thermal power project of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) in Maharashtra at Rs. 5.18 per unit, Chief Minister V D Satheesan said on Wednesday. The decision followed discussions between the state government and the central public sector power company in New Delhi.

The state has been seeking additional electricity as demand has risen sharply and supplies have tightened during peak hours. Keralam has approached several states and power producers for short-term support while also pursuing longer-term power purchase agreements to strengthen availability.

Satheesan said the state had asked NTPC to establish a dedicated power plant for its long-term electricity requirements. NTPC has indicated that it is willing to sign a power purchase agreement to supply the required electricity from its Ramagundam plant, according to the chief minister.

The discussions also covered battery energy storage system (BESS) projects. The 40 MW/160 MWh projects at Pothencode and Sreekandapuram, being implemented by NTPC Green Energy, are now scheduled for commissioning by March 2027. NTPC had invited bids for the combined 80 MW/320 MWh project in August 2025, while the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) had earlier expected the facilities to become operational by the end of 2026.

At Kayamkulam, KSEB, NTPC and NTPC Green Energy will sign a memorandum of understanding for a 2,000 MWh BESS project. NTPC’s proposed 27 MW solar project at the location will also be expedited with state support. The company will provide KSEB with professional and technical expertise in management, technical operations and modern power-management systems. The measures are intended to expand access to dispatchable power and enable battery storage to shift daytime solar generation to periods of peak demand.
