Maharashtra Department Plans Solar Projects for Zero Bills

The Maharashtra Animal Husbandry Department plans to use solar power at its buildings to eliminate electricity bills and generate additional revenue by selling surplus energy. State minister Pankaja Munde said the initiative would support renewable energy adoption while reducing the department’s expenditure on electricity.

A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between the Animal Husbandry Commissionerate and Mahatma Phule Renewable Energy and Infrastructure Technology (MAHAPREIT) to prepare a Detailed Project Report for the proposed solar projects. The agreement was signed on Thursday, according to a statement issued by the department.

The projects will cover land and buildings owned by the department. MAHAPREIT, a subsidiary of the Mahatma Phule Backward Class Development Corporation, has expressed interest in implementing the solar installations on departmental land.

The next stage will involve assessing the availability of rooftop space across the relevant buildings. Officials will also conduct site surveys and examine the technical and financial feasibility of the proposed projects before implementation decisions are taken.

Pilot projects will be launched during the first phase at the rooftops of office buildings belonging to the Animal Husbandry Commissionerate in Pune and the Maharashtra Livestock Development Board facility at Sakud in Ambajogai taluka of Beed district. The pilot installations are intended to provide an initial assessment of the department’s solar power potential and operational requirements.

The department expects the wider programme to reduce or eliminate electricity bills for its buildings in the future. Surplus power generated by the installations could be sold to create an additional revenue stream, while the use of renewable energy would help lower reliance on conventional electricity. The department said the MoU would provide the framework for evaluating the projects and preparing the report needed for subsequent implementation.
