Power Demand Hits 5-Year High Amid Reduced Rains

In a noteworthy development, power demand in India reached a five-year high during the month of September. This surge in electricity consumption can be attributed to a significant reduction in rainfall across the country, affecting hydropower generation.

The energy sector experienced a substantial uptick as people relied more on conventional power sources to meet their electricity needs.

The decline in rainfall has led to a decrease in water levels in reservoirs, impacting hydropower generation, which is a vital source of renewable energy in India. Consequently, thermal power plants have played a pivotal role in meeting the increased electricity demand during this period.

This surge in power demand highlights the importance of maintaining a diverse energy mix and the need for investing in infrastructure to ensure a consistent power supply, particularly during adverse weather conditions.

Implementation Status of Jal Jeevan Mission

Since August 2019 the Government has implemented Jal Jeevan Mission to provide assured potable water through household tap connections in rural India. At the start of the mission only 32.3 million (mn) rural households, representing 16.7 per cent, were reported to have tap water connections. States and union territories have reported that 125.8 mn additional rural households have since been provided with tap connections. The Ministry of Jal Shakti has aligned the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) with the 73rd Amendment to strengthen village level planning and community ownership of water supply.
