Zelestra, EDP Add 462 MWh Battery Storage in Spain

Zelestra and EDP have signed two power purchase agreements (PPAs) to add battery energy storage systems (BESS) to operational solar plants in Spain. The agreements cover the Pedroso solar plant in Seville and the Valkyria solar plant in Castilla-La Mancha, taking the companies’ Spanish hybridisation partnership to four projects.

At Pedroso, Zelestra will develop a 25 MW BESS with approximately 100 MWh of storage capacity alongside the 31 MWdc solar plant. At Valkyria, a 90.45 MW BESS with approximately 362 MWh of storage capacity will be integrated with the 150 MWdc solar facility. Both battery systems will have a four-hour duration.

EDP is already the offtaker for both solar plants and will expand its involvement in Spain’s battery storage market through the latest agreements. The PPAs will increase the partnership’s contracted storage capacity in the country to more than 1 GWh across four hybrid projects.

The companies began their Spanish collaboration in 2025, when they signed an agreement covering 170 MWdc of solar capacity and 400 MWh of storage at a project in Trujillo, Extremadura. Earlier in 2026, they agreed to add a 160 MWh BESS to the 50 MW Pizarroso solar plant in Cáceres.

Zelestra and EDP said hybridising existing operational solar plants could provide a faster route to improving grid flexibility because the facilities already have land, grid connections and renewable generation infrastructure. Pedro Neves Ferreira, EDP’s CEO of Global Energy Management, said the company was combining renewable generation with flexibility assets to improve the value and efficiency of clean energy, strengthen system resilience and support electrification and decarbonisation.

Jaime Burguete, Zelestra’s CEO in Spain, said the partnership was helping deliver large-scale storage capacity in the Spanish market. He described energy storage as a growing segment of the country’s renewable energy sector.
