What is the greatest innovation of the 21st century? While all ‘ayes’ are for AI or Artificial Intelligence, Green Energy may be at the beginning of a big wave. Today there is an urgency to address environmental challenges. Innovations in sustainable technology have hence gained prominence as businesses and consumers alike recognise the importance of protecting the planet. Green tech is not just a buzzword but has dollars chasing it. Elon Musk’s fortune of billions owes its source to the valuation that Tesla enjoys as an automobile company using green tech.Ensuring India’s energy security will be a top priority on Modi 3.0’s growth agenda. The world’s most populous country is also its third-largest energy consumer after China and the US. And as demand expands year-on-year, harnessing alternative energy sources becomes important. Per a recent study by consultancy Mercom India, the country installed over 10 GW of solar capacity in the first quarter of CY2024 to register a whopping 524 per cent QoQ and 534 per cent YoY increase. At nearly 74 GW, India currently ranks fifth in installed renewable energy capacity globally. Its commitment to meeting 50 per cent of its energy requirements through renewable energy sources by this decade’s end is expected to reduce total projected carbon emissions by one billion tonnes. But that’s not all. India’s success in meeting its renewable energy targets will establish it as a major green energy supplier globally and also show the best possible path to be taken by other countries on energy transition. No surprise, therefore, the world’s fastest-growing major economy’s shift to green energy is being tracked closely. In our cover story, India’s Green Dreams: An Infinite Horizon, we discuss the potential opportunities and challenges arising from the exercise. To achieve the target set for 2030, some of the existing regulations need to be revisited, the cost of producing green hydrogen has to be reduced significantly, the Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2022, has to become law, and easy financing made available for projects. Arranging financing for infrastructure projects has emerged as a major talking point following the higher provisioning norms recommended by the Reserve Bank of India. In an interview, Jagannarayan Padmanabhan, Director at CRISIL Infrastructure Advisory feels implementing the proposals will help introduce more efficiencies into the sector. The deep dive story Green Shoots of Project Finance emphasises the development of sustainable and resilient projects even as $138 billion in investment is expected in small and mega projects basis the new FIRST Construction Council report. We eagerly look forward to deliberating on some of the important building blocks of the Indian infrastructure sector at our ‘Viksit Bharat @ 2047’ conclave on July 18-19 in New Delhi. Moving to the rail sector, Prithish Chowdhary, Deputy MD at the wagon maker Titagarh Rail Systems reiterates the importance of creating an aatmanirbhar (self-reliant) rail manufacturing ecosystem. The company which posted impressive revenues in 4QFY25, is working on a long-term plan to emerge as a best-in-class original equipment maker to the world.
