Rs 140 Bn Infra Projects in North India Reviewed by DPIIT Secretary

Shri Amardeep Bhatia, Secretary of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), chaired a high-level Project Monitoring Group (PMG) review meeting to assess progress on major infrastructure projects in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and Uttarakhand. The meeting was attended by senior officials from central ministries, state governments, and private sector project proponents.

A total of 17 key infrastructure projects, collectively worth over Rs 140 billion, were reviewed during the session, which addressed 19 critical issues affecting project execution. The discussions emphasised inter-ministerial and inter-state coordination to accelerate timelines and overcome implementation bottlenecks.

A prominent project under review was the four-laning of the Jaunpur-Akbarpur road, valued at Rs 316 billion. The project spans two key work packages and is poised to enhance regional connectivity and bolster road infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh.

Another focus area was the establishment of new Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) Hospitals across strategic locations in the region. These healthcare infrastructure projects are part of the Centre’s broader strategy to improve medical facilities in underserved areas, thereby enhancing the well-being of workers and their families.

The construction of the permanent campus of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Uttarakhand in Sumari, Pauri Garhwal district, was also discussed. Once completed, the campus will provide a cutting-edge academic and administrative environment, significantly uplifting the region’s technical education and research capabilities.

Reaffirming the Government's commitment to efficient project execution, Shri Bhatia urged all stakeholders to adopt a proactive approach to issue resolution. He encouraged increased engagement with the PMG portal (https://pmg.dpiit.gov.in/), enabling faster resolution of project-related concerns through coordinated efforts with relevant government bodies.

No glass boxes!

India is moving away from the ‘glass box’ syndrome, all-glass façades that were widely used in commercial buildings in the last two decades but came at a significant environmental cost given the country’s predominantly hot and humid climate. Poor thermal performance, excessive heat gain and dependency on mechanical cooling systems made buildings with glass façades energy guzzlers and significantly increased their carbon footprint. That said, it’s important to be aware that “glass is not the enemy,” points out Heena Bhargava, Architect, Architecture Discipline. “How it ..

Why do pavements fail?

India’s highways continue to expand at a healthy pace. But conversations on the surface quality of highways are growing louder because major deficiencies and black spots continue to be identified, and they are cause for concern.“Road surface roughness causes vehicle vibrations that, in turn, can affect the performance of drivers,” explains Dr V K Gahlot, Road Safety Auditor, Centre for Research and Sustainable Development (CfRSD). “Continuous exposure may induce fatigue, a contributory factor to road accidents. Road surface roughness also affects the vehicle operating cost...
