Nagpur-Mumbai access controlled super communication expressway by L&T L&T’s Nagpur-Mumbai access controlled super communication expressway has been a boon to connect the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor, the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, dry ports of Wardha and Jalna and the country’s largest container port, JNPT (Jawahar Lal Nehru Port Trust). The 701 km expressway includes the construction of a six-lane main carriageway of 57.9 km with 15 m wide lanes of rigid pavement on both sides and a 11.25 m wide median. It comprises 198 structures (including ROB over SCR), three interchanges, 12.8 km of service road, 6.4 km of cart road and a precast boundary wall for access control. L&T’s project team has carried out earthwork of 175,000 cu m, 198 structures, and 900,000 cu m of DLC and PQC in just 37 months. Obtaining such a mammoth quantity of soil with minimum lead and cost was a big challenge for the project execution team. In spite of two COVID-19 waves, the project has achieved all the milestones on time. During COVID-19 lockdown, a special task force was created to mobilise workers from various states. International Project of the Year RA 256 in Kuwait by Afcons Infrastructure This key urban development project facilitates unhindered access to one of the largest single-bodied government hospitals in the region including the Jaber Al Ahmad Al Sabah Hospital, located close to the Ministry Zone. Afcons is among the first Indian organisations to execute an infrastructure project in Kuwait and displayed exemplary engineering skills in the construction of interchanges, roads, troughs, signalised intersections, pedestrian bridges and Kuwait’s longest stormwater detention tank. For the first time in Kuwait, a long line mould for the casting of balanced cantilever curved span incremental height segments was used. Balance cantilever precast segments for curved bridges with super-elevation were erected over live highways. Another unique feature has been the construction of bridge segments with the balanced cantilever method at the third level of interchange. The project has clocked in 18 million safe man-hours and has registered several engineering benchmarks in the region. The project was officially handed over in June 2022. Innovation in Retailing Infra.Market Infra.Market is one of India's leading tech-enabled construction solutions companies. Creating a multi-product construction materials brand through tech innovation, the company is transforming the construction ecosystem and its supply chain not only in India but also globally. The firm has a micro-manufacturing unit of 500 manufacturers across seven to eight categories connected through technology, which is a first-of-its-kind in the industry. It has launched exclusive retail stores and experience centres in the organised sector, giving customers access to multiple product categories and a variety under one roof. Using VR, the company has allowed customers to experience products such as tiles in a 3D design environment to choose the best solution. Innovation in Construction Technique Mumbai Trans Harbour Link by L&T The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), being constructed by L&T Construction, Heavy Civil Infrastructure, is a 21.8 km freeway grade road bridge connecting Mumbai with Navi Mumbai, and is nearing completion. The MTHL will be constructed in three sections. L&T in consortium with IHI, Japan, is executing the 10.38 km long Mumbai Trans Harbour Link Package-I of Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA). When completed, it is slated to be the longest sea bridge in India. The sea link contains a six-lane highway, including a 16.5 km sea bridge and 5.5 km of viaducts on land on either end of the bridge. MTHL-1 introduced India’s first orthotropic steel deck, the longest span being 180 m weighing around 2,475 MT. The foundation has been constructed using the unique concept of a floating concrete tub and the pile caps comprise 600,000 cu m of concrete. To ensure hassle free availability of concrete for casting, two floating batching plants were installed for marine construction work and two batching plants were installed at land portion for interchange and intertidal zone. The project also has the pride of using one of the largest barges in India (110 m L X 64 m W X 6 m H) that equal to the dimension of a football field, specially made by L&T for the transportation and erection activities at marine. The structure consists of 6,700 precast girder segments, 540 piers and 90,000 MT of steel rebars and is undoubtedly a wonder in the making.
