Smiley Monroe is strengthening its footprint in India as a key growth market for its conveyor belts and engineered components business. In this interaction, Prabhu Gopinath, Operations Director, outlines the company’s expansion roadmap, quality focus, and sustainability commitments driving future scale. Can you share Smiley Monroe's journey and its core mission?Smiley Monroe was started in Northern Ireland in 1979, supplying conveyor belts to local quarries. Since then, the company has grown to become a global leader in the supply of endless belts and CNC-cut rubber and plastic parts. In 2012, we opened Smiley Monroe India so a key OEM customer could receive the same high-quality products and support for its Indian operations. From our Hosur, Tamil Nadu facility, we now serve more than 10 OEM customers, a growing dealer network, and end users.Which key areas does the operations team in India focus on to ensure efficiency and quality?Efficiency of service and supplying superior-quality products are integral to our operations. Our global supply chain is regularly audited to ensure our raw materials are consistently of high quality. Alongside our on-site quality team and in-house testing facilities in India, we are fortunate to have the support of our global quality team, who are on hand to share expertise and resources when needed. How does Smiley Monroe ensure product quality and innovation? From raw materials to the finished product, our quality standards are the foundation of everything we do. We have invested in state-of-the-art CNC machines and belt presses (for hot vulcanising) to ensure that the finished product is of superior quality. All our operatives are highly skilled, with a focus on continuous improvement and learning.Sustainability is a growing concern in manufacturing. How is Smiley Monroe addressing this?Sustainability is embedded within our Giant Leap strategy, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Centred on the People and Planet pillars, we are improving circularity, reducing waste, and progressing toward net-zero emissions.Looking ahead, what are Smiley Monroe's future plans? We aim to triple our sales by 2028, and India will be a strategic part of this expansion with increased factory square footage in 2026. We’re investing in additional CNC machines to increase the capacity of our cut rubber and plastic parts production. As our capacity increases, we will be seeking to supply OEMs and end users not just within India but also across surrounding markets.
