Nitin Gadkari, Minister, Road transport and highways, said that India is looking to convert its roads into electric highways and that the focus now is on a change from polluting fuels and converting roads into electric highways with an infusion of more electric buses and trucks.  He said the government's primary focus lies in transforming the road infrastructure into electric highways, with an increase in the population of electric buses and trucks. This paradigm shift is expected to yield a substantial reduction in logistic costs, potentially up to 30 per cent as compared to diesel-fuelled transport he said. With India's fuel import bill currently at Rs 16 trillion and predicted to increase to Rs 25 trillion due to the vehicle industry growth, the objective is to reduce the nation's reliance on expensive fuel imports even while curbing pollution. Apart from the shift towards alternate fuels, there is a concerted effort to replace diesel construction equipment with methanol-powered counterparts. In this context, he mentioned replacing diesel construction equipment with alternate fuel like methanol for trucks.
