Illegal construction of 86 govt buildings found in GO 111 areas in Hyd

At least 86 government institutions illegally built on GO 111’s green zone, protected by law to preserve Hyderabad’s drinking water reservoirs – Osmansagar and Himayatsagar, according to the 2016 official survey.

The 2016 official survey quick scan, conducted across the 84 villages, shows the illegal construction of government buildings on GO 111.

These government structures include electricity offices, Anganwadi centers, schools, Gram Panchayat buildings, police stations, and other offices, Self-help groups (SHG) buildings, states the document submitted to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that was hearing a GO 111 case.

Environmentalists claim that more such ventures, like community halls and government-owned plotted layouts, have cropped up in the last five years, while there has been no official list since then.

Veteran environmentalist Capt J Rama Rao through a series of letters consistently highlighted the clear violation of GO 111. He even called out the government for alienating its land of 30 acres in Cherlaguda to an educational institution, in one letter from 2015.

Capt Rao said that in many cases, the government has changed the land use from a conservation zone to a residential zone for the interest of private parties. That’s deplorable.

Some environmentalists claim that the government has even allowed over 200 acres across Khanapur, Vattinagulapally, and Chilkur to senior government officials and political leaders to construct homes, despite knowing that it falls within the purview of GO 111.
