Karnataka Plans Long-Term Development of BMRDA Areas

Karnataka is preparing comprehensive 10 to 15-year development plans for areas under the Bangalore Metropolitan Region Development Authority (BMRDA), Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said. He was speaking at a meeting of the Strategic Senior Advisory Group for the Bangalore Metropolitan Region Economic Development Plan on Monday.

Shivakumar said all areas in Bengaluru Urban District would be brought under the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA). The state is targeting an economy of $1 tn by 2047, with an intermediate plan to reach $400 to $420 bn by 2037.

The Bengaluru Metropolitan Region (BMR) plan includes measures for traffic management, housing and industrial development. It proposes nine integrated industrial townships, while 7,900 acres of land has been acquired and the process of acquiring a further 5,600 acres is under way.

The government has also announced an artificial intelligence city modelled on Singapore’s Punggol and is identifying land for an AI university. Shivakumar and Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda stressed the need for detailed transport planning for Bengaluru and its outskirts, including a 312-km expansion of the Metro network by 2037 and improved suburban rail connectivity.

The meeting discussed a 210-km ring road linking 10 additional hubs and connecting Peripheral Ring Road (PRR) Phase 2 with NICE Road. It also examined a 270-km Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) covering the Bengaluru-Tumakuru, Bengaluru-Mysuru and Bengaluru-KGF corridors, along with extending the proposed Mumbai-Bengaluru high-speed rail line to Mysuru.

BMR is expected to require 3,600 MLD of water by 2037. The government plans to prioritise treated-water recycling and lake rejuvenation while meeting drinking and industrial requirements over the next 10 years. The housing plan covers around 650,000 homes, including facilities for approximately 50,000 industrial workers.
