New Parandur Airport approved by Tamil Nadu Government for Chennai

The approval has been granted by the Tamil Nadu government for the acquisition of 3,774.01 acre of patta land and the alienation of 1,972.12 acre of government land in Parandur and 19 other villages in Kancheepuram district to establish a greenfield airport for Chennai. The issuance of the government order for the special land acquisition and financial sanction has been confirmed.

Opposition to the airport project by villagers

Those who are anticipated to face displacement due to the project have vehemently objected to the decision and organised protests. With the support of environmental activists, they have requested the state government to abandon its intention to acquire their patta lands. In villages like Ekanapuram, residents have been staging daily protests against the land acquisition for the airport project, which is estimated to have a cost of around Rs 200 billion.

Examination of feasibility and benefits

The state government has suggested the establishment of a greenfield international airport to meet the increasing air connectivity demands for passenger transportation and cargo movement to and from the state. The airport is expected to enhance airport infrastructure and facilities, fostering economic growth in tourism, healthcare, logistics, and e-commerce sectors.
