Cabinet Approves Semiconductor Unit in UP

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the establishment of a sixth semiconductor unit under the India Semiconductor Mission. This joint venture between HCL and Foxconn will be located near Jewar airport in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) area of Uttar Pradesh.

The plant will manufacture display driver chips used in mobile phones, laptops, automobiles, personal computers, and other devices with displays. Designed to process 20,000 wafers per month, it will produce up to 36 million units monthly.

Currently, five semiconductor units are in advanced construction stages, and world-class design facilities have emerged across India. Students and entrepreneurs in 270 academic institutions and seventy startups are working on cutting-edge design technologies, with twenty products already taped out by SCL Mohali students.

This new unit will attract an investment of Rs 37.00 billion and further Prime Minister Modi’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat by supporting the growing demand for chips in laptops, mobile phones, servers, medical devices, power electronics, defence, and consumer electronics manufacturing.

The semiconductor ecosystem is also strengthening, with global equipment makers and chemical suppliers establishing a presence in India to support the industry’s growth.
