KaleidEO leads edge computing in space

KaleidEO, the Indian subsidiary of SatSure Analytics based in Bengaluru, has achieved a significant milestone by successfully implementing edge computing technology in space. This achievement marks a groundbreaking moment as it enabled the generation of actionable insights from an image captured by an orbiting satellite in real time.

Edge computing is a technological approach that allows data to be processed and analyzed at its source, whether it's on a factory floor, within a utility system, in a smart city environment, at a retail store, or, in the case of KaleidEO, even in outer space. Unlike the conventional method where raw data is transmitted to a central data center for subsequent processing and analysis, edge computing enables immediate on-site analysis.

This successful demonstration not only showcases KaleidEO's expertise in analysing satellite imagery in the space environment but also serves as a catalyst for their ambitious plans. They intend to launch four Lower Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites equipped with edge computing capabilities into space in 2025.

Rashmit Singh Sukhmani, the co-founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of SatSure, commented on this achievement, saying, "This capability will empower us to address national security requirements, enhance real-time disaster response capabilities for governments, and revolutionise the entire process of collecting, processing, analyzing, and transmitting imagery and insights derived from satellite data."

KaleidEO has developed edge algorithms designed for various applications, including cloud detection, identification of road networks and building footprints, water-body detection, and image template matching for change detection.
