Mumbai ranks 6th globally in data centre capacity under construction

The report, which assesses 97 global markets, attributes the surge to growing cloud computing and AI demands, alongside access to power, land, and strong infrastructure. Mumbai currently has 335 MW of data centre capacity under construction—set to boost its operational capacity by sixty-two percent. The city now contributes forty-two percent of India’s under-construction data centre capacity.

In Asia Pacific, ten of the world’s thirty largest data centre markets are now in the region. With 1.6 GW of new capacity added in 2024 and 14.4 GW under construction or planned, Asia Pacific’s data centre momentum is accelerating.

The report places Mumbai as the seventh most established data centre market in APAC. Pune and Bangalore also feature among the top five emerging hubs in the region, with Pune ranked fourth.

Pune, with 112 IT MW of operational capacity and 190 IT MW under development, is gaining traction among hyperscalers and colocation providers. Companies such as STT GDC, Nxtra by Airtel, and IronMountain are expanding in the region due to its climate, talent pool, and proximity to Mumbai’s cable landing stations.

Three key undersea cable projects are also expected to land in Mumbai by 2025—2Africa, India-Asia-Xpress (IAX), and India-Europe-Xpress (IEX)—enhancing India’s digital connectivity across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
