Hindustan Zinc Joins ICMM to Enhance Sustainability Leadership

Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) has highlighted the strategic importance of its recent entry into the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), becoming the only Indian company among the council’s 26 global members. The move positions India within a high-level global forum focused on responsible mineral development and sustainability in the mining and metals industry.
The development comes at a time when demand for critical minerals such as zinc and silver is rising sharply due to the growth of renewable energy, green infrastructure, electric mobility and advanced digital technologies.
Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Chairperson, HZL described the membership as a significant milestone for both the company and the country, noting that it strengthens opportunities for collaboration with global mining leaders and reinforces the company’s commitment to sustainable and innovative resource development.
The company said its inclusion in ICMM reflects India’s expanding role in shaping global frameworks for sourcing and governing critical minerals essential to clean-energy systems. HZL’s work in decarbonisation, renewable energy adoption, circular operating models and community development has contributed to this recognition. The company also supports the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative and is working to align with the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights.
By adopting ICMM’s Mining Principles and meeting its stringent sustainability criteria, Hindustan Zinc aims to advance a competitive and resilient mining ecosystem for India. As global industries seek transparent and responsible supply chains for essential minerals, the company’s membership is expected to strengthen India’s position within the critical-minerals landscape.
