UPS to spend up to $20 million on its first India tech centre

UPS will invest between $15 and $20 million to establish a technology centre in India. This is the first-of-its-kind facility that the Georgia-based logistics company is establishing in the South Asian region.

“Every day, we move around 6% of the US GDP (gross domestic product) and 3% of the international GDP. It is the scale at which work is done, and technology is at the heart of it, with the majority of the technology-based in Europe and the United States. What we are currently constructing in India is a technology development centre that will effectively support and contribute to the creation of capabilities that have already been applied both worldwide," said Bala Subramanian, EVP and chief digital and technology officer, UPS

This building, which will open in August of this year, will have a capacity of 450-500 personnel. The employment process will begin soon and will eventually employ 1,000 people. UPS intends to run the facility at full capacity by 2025.

According to Bala Subramian, the centre would primarily cater to operational technology and interface technologies such as financial, HR, and legal competence.

"Now, we can do it all around the world, including Europe and the United States. Yet, our needs are outpacing our ability to hire. So why not construct in India? "He stated.

UPS is aggressively extending its presence in India after a long absence. UPS expanded its network in 2022 with the addition of a second dedicated airport gateway in Bangalore. UPS has increased its export and import handling capacity by combining it with its largest facility in India at Delhi airport.

UPS has established MOVIN Express for India's domestic logistics industry in collaboration with InterGlobe Enterprises, which is controlled by Rahul Bhatia and operates India's largest airline, IndiGo. MOVIN Express has expanded to 49 cities and 3,000 pin codes in India in less than a year.

Apart from other services, Movin is going to launch a service called 'Next Flight Out', in which it will transport cargo on airlines, and use services including of IndiGo. MOVIN is also establishing ten hubs across the country with the most recent one being in Bhiwandi.
