Rs.7,927 Crore Railway Projects Approved

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has greenlit three major railway projects totaling Rs.7,927 crore. Spanning 639 km across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, these projects aim to cut oil imports, lower carbon emissions by 271 crore kilograms, and bolster connectivity.

The approved initiatives include the 160 km Jalgaon–Manmad 4th line, the 131 km Bhusawal–Khandwa 3rd and 4th lines, and the 84 km Prayagraj (Iradatganj)–Manikpur 3rd line. These multi-tracking upgrades will ease congestion on the critical Mumbai-Prayagraj-Varanasi corridor, accommodating an additional 51 million tonnes of freight annually and reducing logistics costs.

Environmental and Economic Impact The projects will significantly contribute to India’s climate goals, with carbon savings equivalent to planting 11 crore trees. By shifting freight movement from roads to rail, the initiatives will reduce oil dependency and support the nation’s green economy vision.

Regional Benefits The projects span seven districts across three states, positively impacting 38 lakh residents in 1,319 villages, including the Aspirational Districts of Khandwa and Chitrakoot. Enhanced rail infrastructure will improve passenger services, connecting key pilgrimage sites like Trimbakeshwar, Omkareshwar, Kashi Vishwanath, Prayagraj, and Shirdi, while also promoting tourism to destinations such as Ajanta & Ellora Caves and Khajuraho.

Freight and Infrastructure Growth These initiatives will facilitate the transport of critical goods, including agricultural produce, coal, steel, cement, and fertilizers. They underscore Indian Railways' role as a sustainable, energy-efficient transportation backbone.

Aligned with the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, the projects integrate multi-modal connectivity, boosting seamless movement of goods and people. Employment opportunities in construction and associated sectors will drive socio-economic development, furthering the government’s mission of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

This approval reaffirms India's commitment to sustainable infrastructure and inclusive growth while leveraging railways as a catalyst for economic and environmental progress.
