Mysore civic body to collect Rs 417 cr from illegal buildings

Karnataka government's move to regularise buildings that are built violating the bylaws will help Mysore City Corporation to mop up revenue even as there are concerns that it could affect Mysore's brand as a planned city. Aiming at generating revenue to the tune of Rs 417.44 crore this fiscal, MCC is looking at property tax - its biggest revenue generator which is in for revision. The civic body said that it will get money in the form of penalties for building norms violations under Akrama-Sakrama scheme. The money generation depends on the changes made by the government to the scheme for regularisation of violations in tier-II cities. MCC has projected a revenue of Rs 93.20 crore from property tax for 2013-14, which is up by Rs 15.66 crore from 2012-13. The inclusion of properties, that are left out of the tax net, is getting it additional money. A GIS survey has indicated 2.02 lakh properties within MCC limits, while the local body's records put it at 1.72 lakh. The penalties collected for both residential and commercial properties that have violations of over 5 per cent will get it money.
