BMC Begins North Phase of Coastal Road Project in Goregaon

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated construction on the second phase of the Coastal Road Project, focusing on a 1.2-kilometre stretch in Goregaon that lies outside the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) boundaries. Officials confirmed that this segment marks the beginning of foundation work under Package B of the project, which spans 1.66 kilometres between Bangur Nagar and Mindspace in Malad.

On Wednesday, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar conducted a site inspection in Goregaon to review the ongoing work. He directed officials to strictly ensure that no construction is carried out within CRZ-designated areas. During his visit, Bangar also reviewed progress at several other key locations, including Versova, Andheri, Lokhandwala Interchange, and Malad Mindspace, as part of the larger Phase 2 developments of the coastal road.

The north phase of the Coastal Road Project is designed to connect Versova in Mumbai’s western suburbs to Bhayandar, a satellite city. The project includes the construction of interchanges, elevated roads, and twin tunnels. It will pass through a combination of land and creek areas, much of which is governed by CRZ regulations. To manage the scale of work, the entire coastal road project has been divided into six separate packages stretching from Versova to Dahisar.

Civic officials highlighted that starting work in non-CRZ zones first allows the project to advance while adhering to environmental guidelines. They added that the Goregaon stretch is a critical early component of the project and that site-level oversight will continue to ensure timely and regulation-compliant progress.
