ABB partners Ferrari Hypersail for advanced DC power systems

ABB has entered into a technology partnership with Ferrari Hypersail to support the development of advanced electrification systems for the 100-foot oceanic full-foiling monohull yacht powered by renewable energy.

As Electrification Partner, ABB will provide expertise in marine power, Direct Current (DC) technology and advanced electrical systems to help optimise onboard renewable energy generation, storage and management in extreme ocean conditions.

Ferrari Hypersail is designed to push the boundaries of sustainable marine performance by integrating speed, resilience and safety with renewable energy systems. The vessel will operate as a self-sufficient power platform, managing energy requirements for navigation, foil controls, safety systems and propulsion.

ABB brings more than 25 years of experience in DC technology, supported by a portfolio of over 700 patents in the field. The company will contribute expertise in energy management, marine electrical systems and energy storage solutions for the project.

The yacht’s DC architecture will function as a high-performance microgrid with systems operating at 48V and 800 VDC. It will generate, store and distribute power while operating under challenging conditions, including extreme cold, salt spray, pressure and continuous motion.

Ferrari Hypersail is designed to operate in conditions that are as demanding as anything our systems face in industry.”

Enrico Voltolini, Project Leader of Ferrari Hypersail, said, “Hypersail runs entirely on renewable energy. It has to be self-sufficient for weeks at a time in the most hostile ocean environments on earth. Having ABB’s electrification expertise connected to the project is a valuable operational advantage.”

ABB’s team will support Ferrari Hypersail through DC system integration, intelligent power distribution and resilience solutions for offshore operations. The learnings from the project are expected to contribute to the development of advanced power systems for sectors including shipping, renewable energy infrastructure, data centres and industrial microgrids.
