ADB Approves $200 Million Loan for Climate-Resilient Sewerage

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $200 million loan to strengthen climate- and disaster-resilient sewerage and drainage infrastructure in Kolkata, enhancing the city’s livability and sustainability.

This initiative, part of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Sustainability, Hygiene, and Resilience (Sector) Project, aims to improve living conditions, public health, and flood resilience, particularly benefiting vulnerable groups, including women and children.

Addressing Kolkata’s Urban Challenges Kolkata, one of India’s most populous and densely populated cities, faces persistent urban flooding and sanitation issues due to inadequate drainage and sewerage systems. The situation is worsened by climate change, which has led to increased heavy rainfall and waterlogging.

The project will focus on: Expanding Sewerage & Drainage Networks

84 km of trunk and secondary sewerage pipelines 176 km of lateral sewerage pipelines, connecting households 50,000 new household sewer connections 1 sewage treatment plant and 5 pumping stations Enhancing Urban Resilience

Developing an IT-based asset management system for KMC Strengthening property tax revenue collection Expanding the early flood warning system from a previous ADB initiative Raising community awareness on water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) Empowering women through skills training and internships
