Anil Agarwal Backs PM Modi’s Trust-Based Governance Push

Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal has endorsed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Minimum Government, Maximum Governance,” calling trust-based systems a key driver for accelerating India’s manufacturing-led economic growth.

In a post on X, Agarwal highlighted the transformation in passenger experience at Indian airports, stating that 99.9% of travellers now clear customs without waiting for physical checks. He attributed the improvement to the Modi government’s shift towards trust-based regulation and said the recently passed Jan Vishwas Bill would further strengthen this approach.

“Many of you would remember the time when it used to take a long time to clear customs at Indian airports. It was a stressful experience. Today, 99.9% passengers go through without any waiting or checking,” Agarwal wrote, adding that the change has received global appreciation.

Agarwal said the core role of any government is to drive economic development and job creation through manufacturing, which boosts GDP and increases revenue collections. He noted that while strict enforcement is necessary in serious cases such as arms smuggling, narcotics and human trafficking, trust-based regulation should be the standard for the wider business ecosystem.

Referring to insights generated through AI-based data, Agarwal pointed to the high regulatory burden faced by Indian businesses. He claimed that while other countries may issue 100 notices, India issues nearly 800 despite operating at one-third of their production levels. According to him, the Jan Vishwas Bill is crucial to remove such “speed breakers” that distract both management and government officials from productive activities.

“Trust, respect and encouragement for our businesspeople and entrepreneurs will be a game changer,” he said, comparing the proposed regulatory shift to automated toll systems on national highways that allow smoother movement without stoppages.

Agarwal added that such reforms will help India reduce import dependence and achieve the Prime Minister’s goal of building a “Viksit Bharat.
