Bakhtawar Chowk Double-Decker Design Needs More Changes

The design of the proposed double-decker flyover and underpass at Bakhtawar Chowk in Gurugram is likely to take longer to finalise after the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) sought further amendments to the revised plan submitted by Gurugram Metro Rail (GMRL).

The authority wants to use the available space at the junction more efficiently so that the proposed six-lane underpass can be accommodated while maintaining smooth traffic movement between Sector 47 and Medanta Medicity. The underpass is planned to address the increase in traffic associated with commercial developments in Sector 47 and nearby areas.

GMRL submitted a revised design to GMDA on October 1 after being directed to make provisions for the six-lane underpass. The agency said it had incorporated the required changes and submitted revised drawings for approval. The plan relates to Medicity-Satpaul Mittal Marg, which has a right of way of 50 metres.

GMRL has proposed a central pier for the double-decker structure. The first level will comprise an elevated road with three lanes on each side, while the second level will carry a metro viaduct and include a station at Bakhtawar Chowk.

The proposal also includes space for a future underpass to be constructed by GMDA, connecting Sector 47 with the Medanta hospital road. Two service lanes on each side will operate at ground level. GMRL has indicated that the junction has enough width for six lanes, but the connecting roads on either side are narrower and present practical design challenges.

GMDA has therefore asked that the locations of the piers and other structural elements be reconsidered to ensure adequate space for the underpass. Officials from both agencies are working on further changes before the design is submitted again for approval.
