Delhi to Bar BS-IV and Older Commercial Vehicles from November 1

Commercial goods vehicles meeting Bharat Stage IV (BS-IV) or older emission standards will be barred from entering Delhi from November 1, according to an advisory issued by the Gurugram traffic police. The restriction will apply to vehicles entering the national capital from neighbouring areas.

The curbs will cover light, medium and heavy goods vehicles, along with trucks and buses. Vehicles operating under All India Tourist Permits and other service arrangements will also come under the restriction, the advisory said.

CNG and electric commercial vehicles will be exempt from the restriction. Diesel trucks and buses complying with Bharat Stage VI (BS-VI) emission standards will also be allowed to enter Delhi.

Buses registered in Delhi will not be covered by the ban, according to the traffic police advisory. The exemptions are intended to distinguish vehicles using cleaner fuels or meeting the latest prescribed emission standards from older commercial fleets.

The traffic police has asked transporters, drivers and bus operators to verify their vehicles’ emission standards and registration details before entering the national capital. The checks are intended to help vehicle operators establish whether their vehicles qualify for entry once the restriction comes into force.

The measure is aimed at reducing air pollution and protecting the environment in Delhi, where restrictions on older and more polluting vehicles are periodically introduced during periods of deteriorating air quality. Transport operators will need to ensure that eligible vehicles carry the relevant registration and compliance documents while travelling towards the city.
