The Delhi government will roll out 150 new electric buses next month, Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh announced after reviewing electric vehicle infrastructure and depot projects with senior Transport Department officials. The review covered initiatives under the National Electric Bus Programme (NEBP), the PM E-Drive scheme and construction of new bus depots across the national capital. Singh said the government was developing bus depots and charging infrastructure simultaneously, with project sites being monitored to ensure the new buses enter service without delays. The expansion is intended to strengthen clean public transport and support Delhi’s effort to develop a more sustainable transport network in line with the government’s environmental priorities. Around 5,088 electric buses are currently operational across 40 depots in Delhi, while chargers are being installed at three additional depots. Five new depots are being developed under the NEBP, with combined charging capacity for 768 buses. Under the PM E-Drive-1 initiative, charging infrastructure capable of supporting 2,800 electric buses is being created across 16 depots. A further 16 depots, with capacity for 2,710 buses, will be developed under PM E-Drive-2. Both phases are scheduled to be completed in stages over the next two years. To improve connectivity in rural and outer areas, the government is constructing depots at Daurala and Jhuljhuli, with capacities of 250 and 500 buses respectively. The Transport Department has also asked the Delhi Development Authority to allocate land at five locations, including Tikri Kalan Village, Jaunti Village, Mungeshpur Village, Bakkarwala and Ghazipur Mandi. Requests have additionally been made to the DDA, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation for space to establish charging stations, including land to expand the Rithala depot. The Directorate of Panchayats has allocated land to the Delhi Transport Corporation and the Transport Department for further depot and charging facilities.
