Government Plans Expansion of EV Charging Facilities at Airports

In a major push towards e-mobility, the Union government is set to expand electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across key public spaces, including airports, highways, and—for the first time—ports. These charging stations are expected to feature battery-swapping services, further enhancing convenience for EV users.

Strategic Infrastructure Expansion The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) is currently collaborating with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and various state governments to identify strategic locations for EV charging stations.

Highways: MHI has already identified 20 national highways with high truck traffic. While the ministry will cover 80% of the costs, NHAI will independently manage the tendering process.

Airports & Ports: In a first-of-its-kind initiative, charging stations will be integrated into major airports and ports, supporting the government’s broader e-mobility goals.

Part of the PM Electric Drive Revolution This initiative falls under the Rs 109 billion PM Electric Drive Revolution, a key policy push aimed at accelerating EV adoption and building a robust charging ecosystem across India. By ensuring widespread accessibility to charging stations, the government aims to boost EV adoption, reduce carbon emissions, and support sustainable transportation
