India Advances Sustainable Transport with BS7, Biofuels and Safety

Shri Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, shared the Government’s vision for sustainable transportation, saying, “As the world’s third-largest automobile industry, India must prioritise comfortable public transport. We will maintain global alignment on BS7 and CAFE norms to tackle air pollution. Additionally, shifting to biofuels helps reduce India’s crude imports and enhances farmers’ incomes. More than 300,000 vehicles have been scrapped following the scrappage policy, benefiting industry, government and the environment.”

Shri Gadkari was addressing the 65th Annual Convention of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), where industry leaders and policymakers discussed sustainable mobility as a key factor in achieving Viksit Bharat by 2047.

He added, “Logistics costs will reduce to single-digit levels by the end of this year. Road safety remains a critical priority. Therefore, public campaigns and engagement with NGOs are essential to encourage responsible behaviour and prevent accidents. For those assisting road accident victims, Rs 25,000 will be awarded to ‘Rah-Veers’, in addition to providing insurance coverage of up to Rs 150,000 to accident victims.”

The Minister’s remarks highlighted the Government’s commitment to environmentally responsible growth, improving transport infrastructure, supporting rural livelihoods, and enhancing road safety across India
