Jhansi-Bina Third Line Completed, 32 Stations to Benefit

Indian Railways has completed and operationalised the third railway line between Jhansi and Bina, concluding a decade-long infrastructure project intended to ease congestion on a key section of the New Delhi-Mumbai route. The Tamil Nadu Sampark Kranti Express became the first train to travel across the newly completed section on 15 October.

The 153 km project was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs in August 2016 and covers parts of Jhansi and Lalitpur districts in Uttar Pradesh, as well as Sagar district in Madhya Pradesh. The final cost stood at Rs. 22.74 bn, compared with the original estimate of Rs. 20.02 bn.

Railway officials completed speed trials on 13 October, demonstrating that the line could support train operations at 120 km per hour. Electrification of the 25 KV system was completed on 12 October after an inspection by senior railway engineers, enabling the route to be integrated into the electrified railway network.

The final 9 km stretch between Bina and Agasaud required coordination between the West Central Railway and North Central Railway zones. Construction across the route included 12 important bridges, 26 major bridges and 311 minor bridges, with the completed infrastructure expected to benefit 32 railway stations.

By August 2024, 134 km of the project had already been commissioned, leaving the final section to be completed and placed into service. The third line is expected to provide additional operating capacity on the broad gauge double-line corridor, which forms part of the heavily used New Delhi-Mumbai route.

The Jhansi-Bina section had been operating beyond its available capacity, limiting the movement of passenger and freight trains. With the third line now operational, railway authorities have an additional track for managing traffic, improving scheduling flexibility and supporting future growth in rail services across the region.
